About Parc National des Grands-Jardins

Parc National des Grands-Jardins is located in the Charlevoix region of Quebec and is part of the network of parks managed by Sépaq. It spans an area characterized by boreal forests, mountain plateaus, and alpine tundra, creating a unique ecological transition zone not commonly found in the region. The park features extensive glacial landscapes, numerous rivers, wetlands, and open peatlands, which support a variety of wildlife including moose, black bears, lynx, and a rich diversity of bird species. Its name derives from a historical reference to the area’s former use as clearing fields (the “grand gardens”) by early settlers. Visitors can explore over 90 km of marked hiking trails that vary from gentle nature walks to challenging climbs to mountain summits offering panoramic views. The park also boasts excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, fishing in its coldwater streams, and winter activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Grands-Jardins offers backcountry camping options that appeal to adventurous visitors seeking solitude in a wilderness setting. The park is also noted for conserving fragile alpine and bog ecosystems that are rare in southeastern Canada. Its geographic location within the Laurentian Mountains provides dramatic scenery and distinct natural environments, making it a valued destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Facilities include a welcome center near the entrance with interpretive displays, making it an accessible and educational experience. Parc National des Grands-Jardins balances conservation with outdoor recreation, emphasizing respect for the delicate habitats present.
